It’s good to know that you can easily overcome fears and phobias with hypnosis, because such anxieties are extremely common. More than 10% of people will experience a simple phobia at some time in their lives. From elevators, spiders and birds, to heights, dentists and open spaces, there is nothing we can’t develop anxiety or phobias about.
But you’re not doomed to be stuck with them forever.
Happily, hypnosis provides an extremely effective cure for these problems as it provides the opposite of anxiety – deep relaxation. At the same time, it teaches the mind a different way of responding to the feared object or situation. Hypnosis for phobias works by detaching the stimulus (trigger object) from the emotional response (fear) and ‘updating’ the brain with a new, more realistic response.
Phobias can be very limiting, whether it be driving on motorways, driving over bridges, fear of spiders, being a passenger in a car, heights, exams, fear of flying, water, going to the dentist or numerous others. Phobias are founded by the primitive emotional part of the brain perceiving that we are in danger. However, these fears can be unfounded, and having these phobias can be at best, inconvenient, and at worst can rule our life.
Often phobias can be tracked back to an initial event that was perceived as traumatic by the part of the brain that locks in memory patterns of this type. This part of the brain is doing a good job, trying to protect you from threats, and therefore you are encouraged to avoid the situation.
Hypnotherapy treatment for fears and phobias is systematic and effective.
First you will learn and practice an effective relaxation or anti-anxiety technique.
Secondly we’ll train you in hypnosis and self-hypnosis and begin to build an inner calm self-confidence and a greater sense of control.
Finally, and most importantly, we’ll systematically ‘desensitise’ you to those fears and phobias by having you imagine being in those situations while under hypnosis and practicing deep relaxation as you rehearse those situations in your imagination.
By repeatedly imagining yourself in those situations while I coach you to relax we build a new automatic reflex of natural calmness therefore developing a normal rather than oversensitive response. This method of “systematic desensitisation” has a long history of effectiveness in clinical studies – and combining this with hypnosis we achieve positive, permanent results more rapidly.
